The principles behind Happy Mails
Happy Mails are an opportunity to pause from your day giving you the chance to unwind, reflect on and feel good about yourself and your life. So much focus in life is on the negative and dreary. Life is not easy. This is an attempt to redress that imbalance, providing you with tips and ideas to boost wellbeing and relieve stress.

Reflecting on the good things in your life will hopefully give you a sense of hope, optimism and an appreciation of your life. Furthermore, Happy Mails may offer you an opportunity to develop your personal strengths. Much positive psychology research is quickly concluding such strengths are important to happiness, emotional wellbeing and health.

Suggested activities are intended to draw on your personal strengths and enhance wellbeing. You will have opportunities to show optimism, gratitude, kindness, curiosity as well as other strengths. There are suggestions for trying new things and adding variety to your life.

Compiling lists provide you with a chance to focus on the good things in your life. The vast majority focus on the here and now and as such may help lift a mood. Furthermore, devising your lists may inspire you to act. For example in the sample you list your interests. Such brainstorming may inspire you to make time for your interests or even motivate you to resume neglected interests. These lists may help boost gratitude and an enthusiasm for life. Or, having compiled your Top 5 books, you take the opportunity to read them again, or tell other people about them.

Each section has a purpose; as such here are some comments on the sections you may be wondering about.

Word to use in conversation as often as possible
This is an opportunity to think creatively, and to have fun in your life. It is an easy way to get in touch with the lighter side of life.  Humour can relieve stress and associated health risks.

Drawing of my week
The aim of this task is for you to reflect on and draw something positive from your week. This can be a real challenge when you have had a difficult week. However, finding that good thing can make you feel hopeful and realise that life is never all bad. Drawing is also a great way to get creative.

Word of the week
Think about the one word that best sums up your week. This is another opportunity to get creative as well as giving you time to reflect on your thoughts, feelings and all that has gone on for you during the week. Since these are Happy Mails, the word should reflect a positive aspect of your life.

Dream of the week
Dream of the week is about your hopes, plans, goals and ideas for the week. Ask yourself: what is inspiring me, what is exciting me, what am I looking forward to? Of course, it can be an actual dream that you had whilst asleep. It can be one that you found intriguing, inspiring, comforting or amusing. Just make sure it was a positive dream. Such reflections can inspire excitement and optimism.
