Teenagers need sleep for good health     26/08/2008
news Teenagers who are not getting enough sleep run the risk of developing high blood pressure. This is according to research at Case Western Reserve University in the US. The study involved 238 13 to 16 year olds who kept sleep diaries as well as having their movements measured whilst they were in bed. Those teenagers who slept less than 6.5 hours a night were at twice the risk of suffering from high blood pressure, which increased to three times if their sleep was troubled. Teenagers generally need around 9 hours of sleep a night.
 

Optimism and cancer     26/08/2008
Optimism has been demonstrated to have a number of benefits for our physical and mental health. However, it is not enough to fight cancer. This finding comes from a study of over 1000 patients with head and neck cancer, conducted by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania. Although an optimistic outlook may have no impact on the outcome, it can help patients deal with the therapies they have to undergo. It can also help survivors of cancer to move on with their lives, after treatment. news

news Exercise brings with it many benefits to your mental and physical health. Recent research conducted in the US at the University of Kansas School of Medicine has been looking at the link between exercise and the progression of Alzheimer's Disease. They discovered that regular exercise can help slow down the progress of the disease, thereby preserving brain function for longer. Other research has shown that exercise can reduce the risk of developing dementia in the first place.
