15 ways to promote happiness

I have created a squidoo page with the intention of sharing simple ideas to bring about greater wellbeing, increased mood and  overall happiness.

I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

One last tip, not included: create your own page about a topic that interests you.

Having a flow experience can boost happiness levels. You are actively involved in a task that is challenging (but achievable) and goal-oriented. Afterwards you feel great. New research suggests that you can feel even better afterwards if you carry out your task with other people. A survey and two experiments conducted by Walker of Bonaventure University in the US supports this idea. The survey had people describe examples of flow and rate their levels of joy. Those experiences that involved others were rated as being more joyful than those carried out alone. The first experiment involved participants carrying out a paddleball game either with another or alone. Again, participants reported greater joy when they had carried out the task with another. The final experiment had participants play a ball game that either required greater interdependence with their team or none at all. The higher interdependent people later gave higher joy ratings.

It would be interesting to see if personality would make a difference. Introverts enjoy time alone and so may achieve greater flow fromn solitary acitivites, compared to extraverts who like spending time with others. Extraverts are in the majority, so could easily have impacted on these findings.

Working in healthcare settings puts a person at risk of burnout, due to being highly demanding but low in personal control. However, research conducted at the University of British Columbia found having achievable goals can boost wellbeing and help workers thrive. Positive goals included getting a good work-life balance, promoting patient care and getting papers published. Whereas those doctors and nurses who were just trying to get through the day, as quickly as possible, were more stressed and had increased health problems.

Walking 3 days a week for just 30 minutes can reduce blood pressure. High blood pressure is a significant health problem and can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Although some research has suggested a person should exercise for 5 days each week to obtain health benefits, this research carried out at Queen's University, Belfast suggests otherwise. For the sedentary person, hopefully knowing that exercising just 3 times a week is beneficial will act as an incentive in a way that a larger goal of 5 times a week may not.

Visualise your goals

Posted by Julia Barnard May 29, 2007

Visualization is an effective technique to help you work towards your goals. New research by Libby and colleagues as the Ohio State University, indicates that such visualization can be more effective from a third person perspective - that is, imagining achieving the goal from an observer's viewpoint. The researchers looked at the 2004 US Presidential election and found those people who visualized themselves voting from a third person perspective saw themselves as pro-voters and were more likely to actually vote compared to those who just did visualization in the first person.

A man in South Korea has been trying for five years to take his driving test. He has completed the theoretical test, after 272 attempts. His struggles stem from illiteracy but he was determined to beat the odds. This man has shown that persistence really pays off and I think reminds us all that if we want something badly enough, we will work for as long as it takes until we obtain that goal. All he has to do now is take the practical test. Good luck Mr Seo!
